Golf in the Médoc

Wine and golf are a great pairing, and our region has got both in abundance.  There is something here for everyone.  We have France’s top course (Des Châteaux at Golf du Médoc), another in the top 10 (Grand Saint-Émilionnais Golf Club), as well as France’s best 9-hole course (Golf de Lacanau-La Méjanne), and other lovely pine and dune courses by the ocean (Resort Hôtel Lacanau).  This is a golfer’s paradise.

Greens, Grapes and Glows

How about combining your grapes with greens?  The Médoc is perfect for wine, golf and spa breaks.  It is home to a number of world-class golf courses.  Chief amongst them is the Golf du Médoc resort, just a 30-minute drive away.  Their championship Des Châteaux course is consistently voted as the best golf course in France, and their second course (Des Vignes) also appears in lists of the top 50 golf courses in France.  With their fantastic practice facilities and world-renowned coaches, it’s not hard to see why many of the French European Tour pros (such as Grégorys Havret and Bourdy) base themselves at Golf du Médoc.  For those of you that aren’t keen golfers, there is always the option of pampering yourself in the relaxing spa, and meeting up with weary golfers for a delicious lunch or dinner afterwards.  Manoir Saussus guests can secure a 20% discount on green fees – please contact us for details.

The Golf du Médoc Resort

Another course that features vines, facials and massages is the Relais de Margaux Golf & Spa resort.  Why not play golf in the morning, and visit one of the prestigious Margaux châteaux for wine tasting in the afternoon? (We’ve found that reversing this order can be a little dangerous!).  This resort is just a 20 minute drive along the stunning Route Des Châteaux from Manoir Saussus.  Relais de Margaux is based around a 19th century wine château, and is accessed along a small road that winds past the world-famous Château Margaux.  Whilst not as great as the Golf du Médoc courses, Margaux presents some really interesting holes, and some lovely views over the Gironde estuary.

(Bunker) Sand and Sea

Perhaps you would prefer golf in the morning and some time spent relaxing at the beach in the afternoon?  If so, there are two options to choose from at Lacanau Ocean, a 40 minute drive from Manoir Saussus through the Landes forest.  The first (the Resort Hôtel Lacanau) is another golf and spa venue.  Here, the course wends its way through mature pines trees that protect golfers from the Atlantic winds that make Lacanau Ocean such a famous destination for surfers.  The second is the Golf de Lacanau-La Méjanne course, which has been voted as the best 9-hole course in France – another award-winning location!  It also features an illuminated mini-golf facility that stays open after the grown-up course has closed.  And if the ocean waves are a little too large for youngsters, there are lovely sandy beaches besides the warm and tranquil waters of the nearby Lacanau and Hourtin lakes.  Fun for all the family.

Golfing Day Trips

Or, if you want to combine your golf with an unforgettable day trip, why not play the Grand Saint-Émilionnais Golf Club?  Tom Doak’s first continental European design is an hour and a half’s drive from Manoir Saussus, close to the UNESCO World Heritage wine-producing town of Saint-Émilion.  Located in a valley fringed by centuries-old oak trees and edged by vineyards, and only completed in 2015, the Grand Saint-Émilionnais Golf Club has quickly established itself in the top-10 golf courses in France.  Manoir Saussus guests are entitled to a discount on green fees – please contact us for details.

Slightly further afield (between two and two and a half hour’s drive from Manoir Saussus) is the French golf coast, near Biarritz.  Featuring a combination of a high-class links, forest and heathland courses like Golf de Seignosse, Tom Simpson’s Golf de Chiberta, Golf de Moliets, and Golf Club d’Hossegor.  Or why not take the ferry across the picturesque Gironde estuary to play at Golf de Royan, Aquitaine’s answer to Manoir Saussus’ home courses at Woburn Golf Club?  Guests can reach this venue in under two hours.
